Two deadly accidents claim 18 lives in Eastern Cape and Limpopo

A total of 18 people were killed in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo roads this weekend. Eleven people died while three others sustained serious injuries when a taxi carrying ten passengers and a Ford Ranger carrying four occupants collided last night on the N2 road near Dutywa in the Eastern Cape. According to the provincial Transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose a total of eight people were certified dead at the scene. “On the Ford Ranger, three occupants, all males died on the scene, while one female passenger sustained serious injuries. On the minibus taxi, it is a total of eight people that died on the scene, four males and four females. Two other people sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for medical attention,” said Binqose. He added that a culpable homicide docket has been opened for further investigations.Moreover, seven people were killed on the N1 near Ga-Phasha, Botlokwa outside Polokwane in a horrific crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning. The provincial Department of Transport spokesperson Tshifiwa Dali confirmed that seven vehicles including a taxi were involved in the accident. “A total of seven lives were lost on the scene whilst five were injured. The injured were ferried to hospitalThe possible cause of the accident is still unknown since investigations are underway,” explained Dali.Dali said the department has sent a message of condolences to the families of the deceased and urged all road users to be more cautious.
