South African rapper and television personality Nadia Nakai has responded to the romantic
relationship rumours with musician TOSS, after a Valentine’s Day post sparked widespread
conversation among fans and followers.
This emerged from her appearance on the L-Tido Podcast, where Nakai openly addressed
the speculation surrounding her personal life.
During the conversation, she admitted care and closeness to TOSS without confirming their
relationship status, adding that the images were from a music video shoot.
Many online users questioned whether it was “too soon” for Nakai to move on following the
death of her late partner, Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes. The rapper was tragically shot and killed in
2023 in Durban alongside his close friend, celebrity chef Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.
Responding to the criticism, Nakai firmly rejected the idea that she should remain defined by
her past relationship. The Money Back hitmaker said she refuses to live under public
expectations that keep her “frozen in time” as Forbes’ widow.
“I gained my freedom from this cloud of stigma that keeps me frozen in time as someone’s
widow when I was not married to him. You must understand that Kiernan has been gone
longer than I was with him when he was alive. I am still Nadia Nakai before him and I will
continue to be Nadia Nakai after him,” she said.
Nakai also spoke about the pressure placed on her by societal expectations, describing
them as unfair and unrealistic.
“I love Megacy, but I also love myself and I know I cannot spend my life alone. I cannot
spend my life loving a ghost. I will always love him. He has a special place in my heart, but I
am ready to move on,” she added.
While the length of time a person mourns a partner often varies depending on cultural and
personal beliefs, the announcement of Nakai’s relationship with TOSS has divided public
opinion.
Some supporters argue that she deserves the freedom to live her life and find happiness,
especially after previously speaking about the emotional challenges of coping with Forbes’
death. Others, however, continue to criticise the relationship, claiming it does not sufficiently
honour the memory of the late rapper.
The discussion has once again highlighted the intense scrutiny public figures face when
navigating grief and personal relationships in the public eye.
