The Moses Kotane Local Municipality (MKLM) has scooped two prestigious awards at the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) North West Provincial Municipal Awards.
The accolades recognise the municipality’s sustained improvements in financial management, good governance and public service delivery.
MKLM was also recognised for its outstanding leadership in localising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), demonstrating how global targets can be translated into meaningful local action.
The municipality’s Mayor, Cllr Nketu Nkotswe, congratulated her administration and welcomed the role played by SALGA North West in creating a platform that recognises excellence and sustained improvement across local government.
“We thank SALGA North West for creating this important platform through the Municipal Awards. These awards are an important mechanism to promote accountability, recognise sustainability and track progress in the localisation of the Sustainable Development Goals. They also provide an opportunity for municipalities to learn from one another and celebrate the good work taking place across our province,” said Mayor Nkotswe.
The municipality was recognised for achieving an unqualified audit opinion and for its efforts to localise the Sustainable Development Goals during the previous financial year.
“The recognition demonstrates MKLM’s commitment to ensuring that its planning, development and service delivery programmes contribute to broader sustainable development priorities while addressing local community needs,” added Nkotswe.
The mayor also committed the municipality to continuing its work alongside the council, employees, communities, traditional leaders, government stakeholders and other partners to improve services to residents.
“This collaboration aims to strengthen accountability, improve service delivery, and advance sustainable development across all 107 villages and two townships,” she said.
Meanwhile, Moses Kotane Local Municipality Accounting Officer Mokopane Letsoalo welcomed the recognition, attributing the achievements to the collective commitment of the administration.
“It has certainly not been easy. These achievements are the result of sustained effort, commitment and teamwork. We would like to thank the Council for its support and oversight, as well as our employees, who remain the implementers of municipal programmes, for their dedication and hard work,” said Letsoalo.
He expressed confidence that the municipality would build on the progress achieved and continue strengthening its performance.
“As we look towards the next North West Provincial Municipal Awards in 2027, Moses Kotane Local Municipality is geared to go back on stage and compete for further recognition, particularly by maintaining our unqualified audit outcome and continuing to strengthen our governance and financial management systems,” he added.
