The North West provincial government says it is confident in its state of readiness for the 2026 Local Government Elections, with five days remaining before voters head to the polls.
The province has identified public safety, uninterrupted service delivery and cooperation with law enforcement agencies as key priorities ahead of election day.
MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Oageng Molapisi, gave the assurance during a media briefing at the Provincial Disaster Management Centre in Mahikeng on Thursday, where the province outlined its preparations for the upcoming elections.
Molapisi said the provincial government was optimistic that preparations were progressing as planned. He stressed that authorities had a responsibility to protect the public and create an environment in which all eligible voters could participate fully in the electoral process.
He emphasised that election preparations must not disrupt essential municipal services, saying government administrations were expected to continue fulfilling their responsibilities throughout the electoral period.
Municipalities remain responsible for providing basic services to communities, including water, sanitation, electricity and refuse removal. Maintaining these services is particularly important during the election period, as residents continue to depend on local authorities for essential services while preparing to exercise their democratic rights.
The collaboration is intended to strengthen public safety, support the smooth running of the electoral process and allow eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights without unnecessary disruption.
As election day approaches, the province says its priorities remain maintaining stability, protecting communities and ensuring municipal administrations continue operating effectively.
The success of these preparations will ultimately be measured by the province’s ability to facilitate a peaceful electoral process while ensuring essential services remain accessible to communities across its municipalities.
