An inquest docket has been opened by the North West police following a fatal pitbull attack in Mogwase near Rustenburg.

It is alleged that a 39-year-old man jumped over a fence at a local tavern in the early hours of Saturday morning and got mauled to death by a pitbull.

Police spokesperson Colonel Amanda Funani said according to the information they received; the owner of the tavern asked all the patrons to vacate the premises as it was his time to close, and the deceased waited for everyone including the owner to leave and allegedly scaled the fence.

It was reported that emergency services were called, but it was too late because the man had already died.

Social media users have called for the arrest of the tavern owner while others are blaming the government for the latest trend of pitbull fatal attacks.

In one of the Facebook posts, the tavern owner is accused of negligence while others are saying the country is cursed.

There has been a surge in the number of pitbulls in the last few weeks. So far, almost 5 people including 4 children have been mauled to death by vicious dogs. This prompted the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation to start a petition to lobby for the banning of pitbulls.

So far the petition has more than 150 000 signitaries.
