Herman Mashaba’s ActionSA has called on the Government of National Unity (GNU) to intensify efforts to combat illegal immigration, arguing that government inaction is fuelling public frustration ahead of planned demonstrations on Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party said the government should focus on enforcing existing immigration laws and strengthening border security, rather than concentrating primarily on policing public protests.

ActionSA urged those participating in the demonstrations to do so peacefully and within the law, saying concerns about illegal immigration and South Africa’s sovereignty should be expressed through lawful means.

The party also criticised government’s allocation of R600 million for policing the protests, arguing that similar urgency and resources should be directed towards immigration enforcement and supporting the Border Management Authority.

ActionSA said it has advocated for tougher immigration measures since entering Parliament in 2024, including proposing constitutional amendments, calling for increased funding for border security, and supporting municipal initiatives aimed at enforcing immigration and municipal by-laws.

The party highlighted enforcement operations in the City of Tshwane as an example of local government action against illegal immigration.

ActionSA concluded by urging the GNU to uphold the rule of law, strengthen border management and address illegal immigration as a matter of national priority.

The marches are continuing in Soweto, Johannesburg and Pretoria where different organizations are expected to submit memorandums.
