Tourism leaders, exhibitors and investors attending the Africa Travel Indaba have been urged to use the platform to secure meaningful business deals that will help strengthen Africa’s tourism economy and drive development across the continent.

The annual tourism trade exhibition, regarded as Africa’s largest travel showcase, is being held in Durban under the theme: “Unlimited Africa, Growing Africa’s Tourism Economy.”

The three-day event has attracted local and international buyers, investors, tourism operators and more than 1,200 exhibitors representing over 20 African countries. More than 1,000 buyers from 71 countries are also attending the showcase, creating opportunities for partnerships, investment and international tourism growth.

Speaking during the official opening on Tuesday, Tourism Minister Patricia De Lille highlighted the important role tourism continues to play in transforming communities and creating economic opportunities.

De Lille encouraged delegates and exhibitors to maximise networking opportunities during the event and focus on building partnerships that will contribute to the growth of the sector.

“Let us continue to grow the tourism sector because this sector is changing many lives in our country,” said De Lille.

She added that the large number of exhibitors and international buyers attending the event presented a significant opportunity for African businesses to expand their reach and attract investment.

“It is time to make deals and create business opportunities on the exhibition floor,” she said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also delivered the keynote address at the event, reinforcing government’s commitment to strengthening tourism as a key contributor to economic growth, job creation and regional cooperation.

The Africa Travel Indaba serves as a major platform for showcasing African tourism products, experiences and destinations to the global market. The exhibition includes presentations from hospitality groups, tour operators, cultural organisations, airlines and tourism boards from across the continent.

Industry leaders believe the event remains critical in positioning Africa as a competitive and attractive global tourism destination while encouraging intra-African travel and investment.

The tourism sector continues to recover and expand following years of global travel disruptions, with stakeholders optimistic that increased collaboration and marketing efforts will help accelerate growth throughout the continent.

The Africa Travel Indaba is expected to generate valuable business opportunities and strengthen partnerships aimed at unlocking Africa’s tourism potential.
