ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday reminded party members they need to show that they are worthy to be representatives of ordinary South Africans.
Ramaphosa said this while delivering his political report at the 55th ANC Elective Conference in Nasrec on Friday.
Ramaphosa said this while responding to unruly delegates who kept hackling and insulting him and party chairperson Gwede Manthashe.
The President was interrupted a number of times mostly by some KwaZulu-Natal delegates when addressing members to a point where Manthashe had to step in and call security.
The delegates kept singing and chanting “Phala Phala ” and “change”, while Ramaphosa continued his address.
“One of the tasks we have identified in successive January 8 statements is to build social compact and this is something we continue to pursue,” he said.
“We need to address this issue as we move ahead. We need to strengthen our branches. We need to lead campaigns that will make people realize the goals that are set in our National Development Plan.
“We must be a movement that embraces the pioneering vision of our founders and the fighting spirit of the young lions of the future generations. We must be an organisation that distinguishes itself by the quality of political consciousness of its cadres.
The president urged ANC members to be disciplined wherever they are.
“Members of the ANC must distinguish themselves by their humility, modesty, discipline whether they are in meetings or outside of meetings.
“Let us demonstrate that indeed we are worthy of being delegates of our people by sitting here and debating issues instead of shouting and hauling at each other.”
