The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling for an immediate halt to hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where thousands of people have been killed and scores injured during clashes between the DRC army and the M23 rebels. The remains of three mineworkers Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda are still trapped in a container they were working in when the mine collapsed and engulfed it on this day in 2016. Former Chief Risk Officer at the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) Marubini Ramatsekisa has lost an application to reverse a Special Tribunal order to interdict his pension fund. The Tribunal dismissed his application with costs, after the initial order was granted in December 2023. The investigation against Ramatsekisa was launched after he allegedly defrauded the NLC of about R4 million in 2019. The remains of 14 South African National Defence Force soldiers who were killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will be repatriated on Wednesday. This was revealed by SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya who was answering the questions from members of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee in Cape Town on Tuesday. The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned what it refers to as a misinformation campaign orchestrated by lobby group AfriForum which is now being amplified by US President Donald Trump. The North West acting provincial police Commissioner Major General Patrick Asaneng said they were convinced that members of SAPS helped the alleged Stilfontein illegal mining kingpin James Tshoaeli escape from custody.
