The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling for an immediate halt to hostilities in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) where thousands of people have been killed and scores injured during clashes between the DRC army and the M23 rebels.
Guterres’ plea came ahead of a joint summit between regional blocs East African Community and Southern African Development Community.
Guterres, representatives from the African Union and United nations are also expected to attend the summit, to find a last solution to the eastern DRC.
“We are at a pivotal moment, and it is time to rally together for peace.
We need the active and constructive role of all layers including the neighbouring countries and other stakeholders,” said Guterres.
Thousands of people including women and children have been killed while thousands have been forced to flee their homes.
It is reported that more than one hundred armed groups operate the eastern DRC, that has been plagued by conflicts for decades.
The area is rich in minerals and other natural resources.
The conflict between M23 rebels and the DRC soldiers escalated in January with the rebels capturing the capital city of Goma.
During the clashes, 14 South African National Defence Force soldiers were killed, while others were injured.
Guterres said the situation is taking a toll on humans, emphasised that guns be silenced and human rights be upheld.
“As leaders gather to address this crisis, my message is clear, silence the guns.
Stop the escalation, respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
It is time for mediation and end this crisis,” pleaded Guterres
Moreover, he expressed concern following reports of sexual and gender-based violence and the disruption of lifesaving aid in the area.
