Mining Affected Community (MACCUA) is concerned about the poverty and unemployment rates in Stilfontein, near Klerksdorp in the North West, where actions against illegal mining activities are ongoing. The organisation claims that since the government’s Operation Vala Umgodi halted illegal mining activities at the Margarett Shaft and other locations in the area late last year, individuals have lost their source of income, making it impossible to meet basic needs. Almost two days after firing Eric Tinkler as their coach, Cape Town City has hired Muhsin Ertugral as their new Technical Director. The Eastern Cape Health Department has launched an investigation after a 12-year-old girl gave birth at Frontier Hospital in Queenstown on Wednesday.This is by far the youngest recorded mother to give birth in the province, as it welcomed 44 newborns on New Year. North West Health MEC Sello Lehari has congratulated all the mothers who gave birth to new bundles of joy on New Year’s Day. Twenty-seven babies were born between midnight and 10H00am across the province and the number expected to increase. Speaking to Newsnote, Lehari said between midnight and 06h00 sixteen babies were born in the province. “Six were born in Bojanala, two in Ngaka Modiri Molema, six in Dr Kenneth Kaunda and two in Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipalities.We have 17 boys and ten girls,” said Lehari. A total of 18 people were killed in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo roads this weekend. Eleven people died while three others sustained serious injuries when a taxi carrying ten passengers and a Ford Ranger carrying four occupants collided last night on the N2 road near Dutywa in the Eastern Cape. The Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West, said it expects water to be fully restored to consumers on Friday. This after bulk water supplier, Rand Water, concluded its maintenance project at the Eikenhof pump station on Monday.
