The Gauteng Department of Health is calling on parents and guardians to get children immunized following new cases of measles in the province. The Gauteng Province however said there have been 15 confirmed measles cases since the declaration of a national measles outbreak in October 2022. According to the department, the latest measles case was reported on 10 January in Tembisa, 8 cases from Ekurhuleni district, 2 from Johannesburg district, 4 from Tshwane district and 1 case from West Rand District and there was no case in Sedibeng. Axed ActionSA Tshwane leader, Abel Tau plans to fight back after his political career ended when his former party axed him after he was accused of sexual assault by a family friend last year. ActionSA terminated Tau’s membership in November citing that he had brought the party into disrepute. A 31-year-old Constable is the first woman to complete the South African Police Service (SAPS) Special Task Force Selection Training Programme (STF) since it was established in 1976. According to the SAPS the woman has been serving in the police force for 11 years and she became the only officer to successfully complete the STF without any amendments to the training to try and accommodate women. The 31-year-old, whose identity cannot be revealed for security reasons, is now the only female police officer currently serving as an operational member. The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is yet to find schools for 571 Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for the 2023 academic year which started on Wednesday. Earlier this week, the department said there were 236 grade 1 and 1 158 grade 8 learners still waiting to start schooling. On Friday, the department said it is working on placing 97 Grade 1 and 474 Grade 8 pupils that still haven’t been placed in schools.. The City of Tshwane has expressed disappointment with the electricity tariff hike saying it will be detrimental to “residents and businesses, and the financial sustainability of the City” warning that it will increase the cost of doing business in the city. The power utility has welcomed Nersa’s decision to grant it a 18,65 electricity tariff hike saying it is a positive step to assist with its finances however it still awaits reasons for the decision. Angry parents have accused the Department of Education of prioritising white learners in the placement process while black children are left behind. The parents staged a protest outside Laerskool Danie Malan on Thursday and the two groups of parents – one black and one white – stood on opposite sides of the school.
