The North West Department of Education says 71 learners were involved in a school bus accident on Tuesday, in Gamaloka Village at the Tswaing Local Municipality. According to the department, the accident occurred on a gravel road between Sleepsteen and Gerdau Farms, when the learners were being transported to school. “According to the preliminary paramedic report, 37 learners sustained injuries with the condition of one learner described as of serious concern. The country’s unemployment rate has decreased by 0.5 percentage points from 31.9% in the third quarter of 2025 to 31.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025. This is according to Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke, when he revealed the Quarterly Labour Force Survey conducted by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) in Pretoria. The survey shows that there was an increase of 44 000 in the number of employed persons to 17,1 million, while there was a decrease of 172 000 in the number of unemployed persons to 7,8 million compared with the third quarter of 2025 results. North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Wessels Morweng, has assured striking workers at the North West Transport Investment (NTI) that their one-month salary will be processed on or before Friday this week. President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s economy is regaining momentum, citing four consecutive quarters of GDP growth and improvements in key economic indicators during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the Cape Town City Hall. Two illegal miners were killed and four others arrested, following a gun battle with the police at Blyvooruitzig Gold Mine, in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.
