Forensic analyst Paul O’Sullivan will on Tuesday appear in person before the Ad Hoc Committee established to investigate allegations made by the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

O’Sullivan’s appearance follows his initial refusal to appear before the committee, citing security concerns.

The controversial O’Sullivan is accused of infiltrating the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), impersonating an IPID officer, and having improper relationship with senior law enforcement officers.

His appearance was announced by the chairperson of the Ad Hoc Committee, Soviet Lekganyane.

“This week, honourable members, we only have two days, and we have one witness who is appearing tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday, and the witness is appearing physically. The statement of the witness has been circulated with the members. The name of the witness is Paul O’Sullivan,” said Lekganyane.

He added that parliament security team who engaged him and show him parliament security arrangements put in place for him.

Meanwhile, National Assembly speaker, Thoko Didiza has welcomed O’Sullivan’s appearance, adding that she feels vindicated after refusing request by committee members to summon him.

“The Speaker is pleased that this approach has resulted in one of these witnesses availing himself to appear physically before the Ad Hoc Committee to testify, from Tuesday, without the need for summonses to be issued.  The Speaker understands that engagements are continuing with another witness, Brown Mogotsi.  Should further engagement not yield the necessary outcome, the Speaker will be advised by the Ad Hoc Committee so that the issuing of a summons may be considered,” said parliament spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo.
