North West MEC for Transport and Public Safety, Wessels Morweng, has expressed concern about the increase of crime in the province. These as the crime statistics for the first quarter of 2023/24 recorded an increase of various crime categories in the province, when compared to the previous counting period. “There is a 5% increase of reported crimes, with 1113 more cases compared to the same reporting period the preceding year. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) survey has revealed that the North West had the fifth highest HIV prevalence rate in the country at 12.3% in 2022, with HIV prevalence in the province at 20.8% among those aged 25 to 49 years old overall. This translates to an estimated 465 000 people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the province. The Department of Social Development has again warned pregnant women not to consume alcohol during their pregnancy and play their part against Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Today it commemorates International Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day, under the theme “Everyone Plays a Part.” The department said the theme serves as a call to support a society that is both supportive of people with FASD and supportive of healthy pregnancies. The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has defended staff at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, following a video by a patient Tom London who was admitted at the hospital. The Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Thembi Simelane said she has fully repaid the loan she received from Gundo Wealth Services when she was still the Executive Mayor of the Polokwane Local Municipality in Limpopo in 2012. Three learners have been admitted at the Joe Morolong Hospital in Vryburg, North West, after their scholar bus transport was involved in an accident in Liliefontein. According to the Department of Education, late yesterday (Thursday) after the bus tyre burst. At the time of the incident, there were 18 learners on board, as some had already disembarked at their homes. Fifteen learners received trauma counselling at the local hospital. The country’s economy has strengthened by 0,41% in the second quarter of this year. This was revealed by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke during a media briefing in Pretoria. “The finance, real estate and business services industry increased by 1,3%, contributing 0,3 of a percentage point to the GDP growth.
