A survey by Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has revealed a decline in the sense of safety among individuals walking in their neighbourhoods during the day and at night since 2019/20. This emerged in the Governance, Public Safety, and Justice Survey (GPSJS) 2023/24 released by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke in Pretoria today. According to StatsSA, respondents were asked how safe they felt walking in their neighbourhoods alone during the day and when it was dark. “The sense of safety in the dark among individuals aged 16 and older has declined, dropping from 41,8% in 2019/20 to 34,9% in 2023/24. Four people have died, and three others injured after a fire gutted an abandoned building in Jeppestown, Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) the fire has been extinguished which happened in the early hours Sunday at the corner of Jannie and Jules Streets. “We had about four people who lost their lives during the incident, three people were injured, one critically and was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further medical care. Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, said the discovery of the second biggest diamond in the world, will help improve the socio-economic situation of the country. This after a 2 492-carat diamond weighing around half a kilogram was found using X-ray technology at the Karowe Mine in central Botswana, which belongs to a Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corporation. A joint law enforcement by authorities from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, have led to the arrest of 49 foreign nationals who failed to produce required documents on the N4 in Rustenburg. According to authorities, 12 foreign nationals were also arrested after they were found squeezed inside a 7-seater Toyota Fortuner. The operation is part of the week-long 14th Trans Kalahari Corridor (TKC) Management Committee Joint Law Enforcement Operation currently underway in Rustenburg. President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness at the passing of maths and science education innovator, William Smith. According to his family, Smith passed away following a short battle with cancer at the age of 85 in Perth, Australia. President Ramaphosa conferred the Order of the Baobab on Smith in 2019. The Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, has defended parliament’s decision to designate uMkhonto weSizwe Party parliamentary leader, Dr John Hlophe to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). This emerged in an affidavit she filed at the Western Cape High Court in response to a legal challenge by the Democratic Alliance and some civic organizations, opposed to Hlophe’s designation to the JSC.
