The North West Department of Education has expressed gratitude following a commitment by the Women Empowerment and Development Society in Asia-Africa, to upgrade and renovate some schools in the province. The department says the gesture will see it become a key beneficiary in the North West-Chinese partnership, which is a collaborative initiative between Premier Lazarus Mokgosi and Zhao Meiling, President of the Women Empowerment and Development Society in Asia-Africa. An outbreak of mpox has been declared a public health emergency in Africa by the continent’s top health body. Scientists from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have expressed alarm at the speed by which a new strain of the disease has been spreading. More than 15,000 mpox cases and 461 deaths have been reported on the continent this year – a 160% increase in cases compared with the same period in 2023, while deaths have jumped by around 19%. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) has announced that the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, the official unemployment rate increased by 0.6 percentage points to 33.5% in the second quarter of 2024 According to QLFS results, there was a decrease of 92 000 in the number of employed persons to 16,7 million in this period, while there was an increase of 158 000 in the number of unemployed to 8,4 million compared to the first quarter of this year. The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has cautioned that it is still early to celebrate the end of load shedding in the country. His comments come as Monday marks 1387 consecutive days without load shedding. The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department said several cars were destroyed in a fire at a scrapyard in Booysens on Saturday afternoon. Power utility Eskom has commended itself, for managing to reduce its diesel spend by R9.59 billion over the last five months. This as Eskom has in the past years spent billions of rands to keep the lights on in the country, especially during the high stages of load shedding. “The Generation Operational Recovery Plan continues to deliver efficiencies for Eskom, with R9.59 billion reduction in Open-Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) diesel expenditure from 01 April 2024 to 07 August 2024, compared to the same period last year,” said Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena.
