Gauteng police have made a breakthrough after they arrested two suspects linked to the shooting and killing of five-year-old boy, Ditebogo Junior Phalane, in Soshanguve during a car hijacking last week. The little boy had gone outside to welcome his father who had just arrived home when the criminals accosted him. Ditebogo was then rushed to Botshilong Hospital, where he was certified dead upon arrival. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has unveiled a 36-member preliminary squad for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe. The country’s first-quarter unemployment rate rose by 0.8 of a percentage point to 32.9% when compared to 32.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. This was revealed by Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke in Pretoria when he announced the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) in Pretoria. “The number of unemployed persons increased by 330 000 to 8,2 million during the same quarter. The Minister of Sport, Zizi Kodwa, has announced a new Boxing South Africa (BSA) board, tasked with restoring the integrity of boxing in the country. The appointment follows last week’s consultation meeting between Kodwa and other BSA stakeholders, on prospective candidates to serve on the board. These appointments conclude a seven-week roadmap that was followed to appoint the new BSA board. City Power in Johannesburg said it has managed to repair the damaged electricity infrastructure on the M1 highway tunnel in Johannesburg and fully restored power to affected areas. The damaged was caused by vandalism and cable theft on May 1st, which cost the entity about R160 million. “The entity will request an emergency isolation in order to facilitate the process of restoring full supply. Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has dismissed reports that Eskom is burning more diesel, to keep the lights on in the country. This as today marks 47 days since the county experienced loadshedding. Ramokgopa’s comments come after Eskom’s former CEO André de Ruyter, claimed that the utility has been burning diesel excessively in the run-up to the elections. The death toll from heavy rains in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state rose to 143, up from 136 on the day before, the local civil defense government body said on Sunday, as rains continue to pour on the state. Another 125 people remain unaccounted for in the state, where rivers are reporting rising levels.
