Moroka Swallows has been fined R1 million by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee (DC) for failing to honour two of their Premiership matches in December. This after Swallows informed PSL that they would not pitch for the match due to a players strike at the club over their wages. The Dube Birds, as Swallows is affectionately known, were supposed to face Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows respectively in their last two matches in December. South Africa is confident that it has presented a strong exceptional case at the International Court of Justice at The Hague, Netherlands, as the court today heard the first leg of the case by South Africa against Israel. Pretoria want the court to issue a declaration to stop Israel from committing genocide in Gaza and stop attacking the enclave. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the Newlands pitch as “unsatisfactory” under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process. The pitch recently hosted the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between South Africa and India. The match, which India won by seven wickets, ended in less than five sessions, which made it the shortest Test result in the game’s history. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, NSFAS, said it is vindicated after the Labour Court declared that the termination of the contract of employment of the former NSFAS CEO, Andile Nongogo is lawful and valid. The board terminated Nongogo’s contract last year, following his irregular involvement in the appointment of four fin-tech direct payment service providers. “The NSFAS Board further welcomes the decision by the court to dismiss with costs the application by Nongogo to strike out certain paragraphs as contained in the Werksman Attorney’s report. The North West Department of Health said there were no fatalities or serious injuries when the basement parking of the provincial offices in Mahikeng caught fire. According to the department’s preliminary report, the fire caught a bulk of light bulbs which were stored in a corner at the basement parking. An investigation into what set the light bulbs on fire is underway. The South African Football Association (SAFA) and Bafana Bafana have signed an agreement regarding the players payment structures for participating at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast this month. SAFA and Bafana Bafana representatives met in Stellenbosch, where the team is currently in camp, ahead of AFCON. The late playwright and director Mbongeni Ngema has been described as a veteran of the liberation struggle and mentor to many artists in the country. These are some of the sentiments that were echoed during Ngema’s Special Provincial Official Funeral Category 2 in Durban. Ngema, who was 68 years old, was killed in a car crash two weeks ago on his way to KwaZulu-Natal after attending a funeral in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.
