Captains of industry have lauded the cabinet’s decision to endorse Professor John Lamola’s permanent appointment as Group Chief Executive Officer of the South African Airways (SAA) despite ongoing allegations of political interference in the selection process. The board had apparently preferred Kenya Airways current CEO Allan Kilavuka or Phillip Saunders, whom it was reported scored higher than Prof Lamola in the interviews. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has launched a newly revamped call centre to assist workers throughout the country and from other sectors to resolve their challenges.The call centre was jointly launched in partnership with Rand Mutual Assurance (RMA) at the union’s headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.The union said the substantial investment from RMA will help it expand its reach, using state-of-art technology to better serve the interests of both entities and the plight of the workers.This is the first of its kind partnership, and the union hope it is a long productive one, which will inspire other entities…
The North West MEC for the Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) Bitsa Lenkopane has committed her department and relevant stakeholders to come up with a radical approach in turn State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) around. The country’s policing union has commended law enforcement authorities in the country and police leadership, for their efforts to address the alarming crime rate in the country. South African Policing Union (SAPU), and Independent Policing Union of South Africa (IPUSA) respectively, were reacting to the third-quarter statistics for 2024/25 that were released by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on Friday in Pretoria. According to the statistics, the murder rate has declined by 9.8% in the period under review. Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called on the Higher Education and Training Minister Dr. Nobuhle Nkabane to urgently dispatch a mediation team to cease an ongoing hunger strike by returning students at Wits University. Today marks the seventh day since financially excluded students organised a hunger strike due to their inability to settle their debt or even pay half of the required amount. According to the institution, the students will only be allowed to register if they have a debt of less than R10 000 or pay 50% of their outstanding debt. The Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Conservation and Tourism at the North West Provincial legislature has threatened legal action against Parks and Tourism Board Executives, after they failed to appear before the committee for the second time to account on the delayed payment of salaries and status quo of the entity. The R600 million lease and refurbishment contracts relating to the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital during COVID-19 pandemic awarded by the two Gauteng government departments have been declared unlawful, unconstitutional, and invalid. The declaration order comes after the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) applied to the Special Tribunal to set aside these contracts and recover the state losses. The torrential rains that have battered several parts of the North West have claimed the life of a pensioner in Lebalangwa village in the Moretele Local Municipality. According to municipality spokesperson Mothopi Malebye, the weather condition continues to spiral out of control, municipality personnel have had their hands full trying to assist the over 76 affected villages.
