The Ministry of Police has sought to clarify some aspects of investigations in the rape case involving a 7-year-old minor, in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. This came after the circulation of claims on social media, alleging that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu lied about taking the DNA samples of the girl’ school principal, where the incident allegedly took place. The Department of Water and Sanitation said the ongoing rainfall has necessitated the opening of the fourth sluice gate at the Vaal Dam, as a measure to manage water levels. According to a statement by the Department, the dam’s water levels have risen to 107.82%. “The outflows will increase from 400 to approximately 550 cubic metres per second. The current water releases by the four sluice gates are still withing the safe operational limits and are not expected to lead to overtopping of riverbanks downstream,” read the statement. The Portfolio Committee on Higher Education in Parliament, said it has noted the signing of the proclamation by President Cyril Ramaphosa, that permits the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of mismanagement of funds and corruption within the National Skills Fund (NSF).
