Preparations are under way to mark International Workers’ Day, which will be held at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will host the national celebrations, which coincide with its 40th anniversary.
Cosatu President Zingiswa Losi is expected to deliver the keynote address, reflecting on the state of the trade union movement and the challenges facing workers on the shop floor.
Alliance partners, including the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), are also expected to deliver messages of support.
International Workers’ Day was first observed in South Africa in 1986.
Meanwhile, workers are set to gather at Bultfontein Stadium on Friday for the Free State Workers’ Day commemoration, also led by Cosatu.
The federation’s First Deputy President, Mike Shingange, will deliver the keynote address, alongside messages of support from alliance partners and ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula.
