Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in Portugal’s World Cup squad, confirming his place in history as he prepares for a record-breaking sixth tournament appearance.
Head coach Roberto Martinez included Ronaldo in his 27-man roster announced on Tuesday, May 19, as Portugal prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. If he features in matches, Ronaldo would join longtime rival Lionel Messi as one of the first male players to appear in six World Cups.
At 41, Ronaldo remains a central figure for both Portugal and his club Al Nassr, continuing his pursuit of the only major honour missing from his illustrious international career.
Portugal have been drawn into Group K alongside Colombia, Uzbekistan and Congo, with their opening match scheduled against Congo in Houston on June 17.
Ronaldo is already the all-time record holder for men’s international appearances (226) and goals (143), further underlining his longevity at the highest level of the sport.
Martinez has named a 27-player squad and will trim one goalkeeper to meet the final 26-man tournament requirement.
