The bail hearing of Fadiel Adams is set to continue this morning at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress and a Member of Parliament, faces five charges related to fraud and defeating the ends of justice. The charges are linked to investigations conducted by the Political Killings Task Team, including the murder case of former African National Congress Youth League leader Sindiso Magaqa.
The court previously heard strong opposition from the state regarding Adams’ bail application. Prosecutors alleged that Adams attempted to evade law enforcement officers after an arrest warrant was issued against him.
The state also claimed Adams does not have a fixed and reliable residential address and may interfere with witnesses connected to the case. According to prosecutors, Adams allegedly tried to influence a Hawks officer who assisted him in visiting convicted killer Sibusiso Ncengwa at Westville Prison.
In addition, the state referenced Adams’ alleged failure to comply with a 2023 Equality Court ruling related to prohibited speech.
In an affidavit submitted to the court, Adams denied all allegations made by the prosecution.
The defence team is expected to continue presenting arguments in support of Adams’ release on bail during today’s proceedings.
