The death toll from the floods that have ravaged parts of Limpopo, has risen to eleven, and caused damage estimated to more than R4 billion. 

The floods began on December 25 2025, in the Waterberg and Capricorn Districts and escalated with heavy rains affecting Vhembe, Mopani, and Sekhukhune Districts.  

Briefing the media on Friday, Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba said the floods have destroyed over 430 roads and several bridges, and over 31 schools among others.   

“The floods have caused significant damage, including destruction of roads, bridges, water and electricity infrastructure, schools, and health facilities, resulting in displacement of families and loss of 11 lives,” said Ramathuba, who also expressed condolences to the affected families.  

According to Ramathuba, some of the national damaged roads includes the R527, R40, R71, R36, R578, R526, R529, and R524, as well as district and local municipality roads. 

Furthermore, she emphasised that the scale of the damage is substantial and will require significant resources to address.

Meanwhile, Human Settlements Minister, Thembi Simelane, has dispatched the Emergency Housing Unit of the National Department of Human Settlements to the disaster affected areas in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. 

According to Simelane’s spokesperson, Tsekiso Machike, the team, working together with teams from Mpumalanga and Limpopo provincial departments are currently conducting physical verification of all households impacted by recent heavy rains. 

“The verification process will determine the extent of the damage and inform the department of the appropriate emergency housing interventions to be implemented, assisting affected families,” said Machike.  

According to the report, in Limpopo, a total of four District Municipalities, are currently undergoing verification, while the Capricorn District is yet to commence with the process. 

Machike said to expedite the verification process, Simelane has directed additional capacity to be deployed in both provinces.
