The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has vaccinated more than 1.3 million animals against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) since launching its mass vaccination drive in March.

FMD vaccination drive boosts livestock sector confidence in North West

The North West’s vaccination of more than 1.3 million animals against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) offers a measure of relief to the province’s livestock sector, which has faced significant risks from the outbreak.

With more than 80% of the provincial target herd vaccinated, the programme could help reduce the risk of further livestock losses and limit disruptions to farmers, meat producers, traders and related businesses.

However, with 333 confirmed cases still active, the disease remains a significant commercial risk. Continued outbreaks can affect livestock movement, market access, production costs and farmer revenues, while increased spending on vaccination, veterinary services, biosecurity and disease management adds financial pressure.

The closure of 146 cases, including in parts of Molopo, Rustenburg and Mahikeng, provides an encouraging sign for businesses operating across the agricultural value chain.

For livestock farmers, maintaining strict biosecurity and complying with veterinary controls will remain crucial to protecting herds and limiting potential economic losses.

The vaccination campaign also highlights the importance of cooperation between government, farmers and industry stakeholders in protecting the province’s agricultural economy and food supply.
