Consumers in South Africa are set to face increased financial pressure as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources confirms a sharp rise in fuel prices from Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
Both grades of petrol will increase by R3.27 per litre, while diesel will see a steeper hike of R6.19 per litre. Illuminating paraffin will rise by R4.22 per litre, and the maximum retail price of LP gas will increase by over R5 per kilogram, depending on the region.
Despite the increases, government has implemented a temporary relief measure by reducing fuel levies by R3 per litre on petrol and R3.93 per litre on diesel to help cushion consumers.
Department spokesperson Robert Maake confirmed that a slate levy of 1.23 cents per litre will also be introduced in the price structure of petrol and diesel.
The adjustments are expected to impact household budgets and transport costs across the country.
