Gauteng education authorities have singled out township schools for praise following the release of the province’s 2025 matric results, despite an overall performance that was described as unimpressive. Several township schools produced some of the province’s top achievers.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane announced the results alongside Premier Panyaza Lesufi in Centurion, revealing that Gauteng achieved a pass rate of 89.06 percent.
Chiloane highlighted Lefureng Secondary School in Soweto as a standout performer, noting that the school currently operates from mobile classrooms.
“The brick-and-mortar school we are building for Lefureng is a symbol. It says we see you, we believe in you, and we are investing in infrastructure that matches your achievement,” said Chiloane. “However, the real infrastructure—the one that truly matters—is the teachers who know their craft.”
While reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in township schools, the MEC stressed that buildings alone would not guarantee improved results. He urged all education stakeholders to play their part.
“The real infrastructure is already there: teachers who believe in excellence, districts that support schools, and learners who show up and do the work,” he said. “This culture is spreading.”
Chiloane concluded by emphasising the central role of education in shaping the province’s future.
“Education sits at the centre of our future as a province. It is where opportunity is created or denied, where equity is either dismantled or defended. These results prove something important—that equity is not a burden.”
