The Hawks (South Africa) have presented forensic findings suggesting the possible existence of a coordinated criminal network involved in the movement of shipping containers and related port activity.

Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Sebola told the Madlanga Commission that analysis of confiscated mobile phones uncovered screenshots and communications referencing container logistics, harbour operations, and the gathering of shipment-related information.

According to Sebola, the recovered messages point to multiple individuals allegedly involved in port-related operations, including persons believed to have access to harbour and customs environments. The communications were presented as part of an ongoing investigation into the 2021 Aeroton drug bust, where more than 700 kilograms of cocaine were intercepted in a major seizure.

During proceedings, evidence leader Advocate Thabang Pooe questioned Sebola about the material, highlighting references to different operational actors allegedly connected to activity at the pier. Sebola confirmed that the screenshots reflected discussions involving multiple participants and referenced operations allegedly conducted by individuals identified in the investigation.

The testimony forms part of broader evidence being examined by the commission into organised criminal activity linked to large-scale drug trafficking through shipping and port infrastructure.
