The Independent Electoral Commission (Independent Electoral Commission) has confirmed its readiness for the upcoming voter registration weekend, as part of efforts to achieve a strong voter turnout ahead of the 4 November 2026 Local Government Elections.
Registration will take place over the weekend of 20–21 June at selected stations nationwide. Voters will also have the option to register online via IEC voter registration portal.
IEC Chairperson Mosotho Moepya said the Commission is working closely with the Department of Home Affairs (Department of Home Affairs) to ensure that all eligible voters are able to obtain the necessary identity documentation.
He explained that the Department operates more than 280 mobile registration points, which are coordinated alongside IEC operations to reach communities efficiently.
“The Department of Home Affairs has more than 280 mobile registration points. They circulate that list, we work together with them and go wherever they go, and we register people when they make those documents available,” Moepya said.
He further noted that Home Affairs offices will remain open nationwide during registration hours this weekend to support the process.
According to Moepya, there is currently no significant backlog in the issuing of identity documents that would negatively affect voter registration turnout.
He also urged members of the public not to panic in the event of a lost ID, reminding them that temporary identity certificates can be issued at the nearest Home Affairs office.
Moepya expressed confidence that security and other operational measures are in place to ensure a smooth and well-managed registration weekend. He also called on all stakeholders to comply with IEC regulations and uphold integrity throughout the electoral process.
