The ANC Youth League in the North West has nominated just two candidates to run for the position of the Provincial Chairperson at its 10th Provincial congress to be held on Sunday in Rustenburg.
The elections pitted the Provincial Convenor and the current MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng who is seeking a second term against the league’s Provincial spokesperson Motebang Mohlomi.
Morweng and Mohlomi were elected as the chairperson and provincial communications officer at the 9th Congress, respectively. The committee has since been dissolved and replaced with the Provincial Task Team (PTT) following the lapse of office of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
The league’s two days has exacerbated a bitter divide between the two leaders, who both enjoy support of the young lions from their region of Ngaka Modiri Molema in Mahikeng. Now the delegates at the congress must decide which candidate is best placed to revive its fortunes.
Morweng is touted to return as the Provincial Chairperson, given the advantage of having served on several structures of the league since 2014, when he was elected Regional Secretary in the Ngaka Modiri Molema district.
On the other hand, Mohlomi, who is the PTT spokesperson will have a mountain to climb to defeat Morweng to win the provincial chairperson’s seat.
Speaking to Newsnote, the Provincial Coordinator, who was elected the Provincial Secretary in the previous congress Tshiamo Tsotetsi said they’re ready to host the congress over the weekend.
“It’s all systems go, from the logistical point of the view, equally the branches of the ANCYL and structures as well as all other fraternal structures that we have invited to participate in the congress.
We have also invited other important formations that are dealing daily with matters of young people, structures such as COSATU Youth that is tasked to address challenges facing young workers.
We have invited structures such as Contralesa Youth,” said Tsotetsi.
In addition, Tsotesi said all the youth league branches and regions are in good standing and have met all the requirements to qualify to participate in the congress.
“You will remember that organising a conference of the organisation starts with the branches having to convene their own branch general meetings (BGM) to nominate the delegates who will represent them at the conference. Now, BGMs also have the responsibility to initiate solutions to challenges confronting our youth all the time.
In terms of the constitution of the ANC Youth league 90% of the participants in terms of voting delegates will be drawn from the branches of the ANCYL and the rest of the 10% will be drawn from provincial structure and the regions as well a portion of delegation at the conference,” explained Tsotetsi. ANCYL PTT said that it is ready to deal with any disputes that might arise at the congress over any dissatisfaction.
The congress is expected to be officially opened by the ANC Youth League President Collin Malatji accompanied by the ANC Provincial Chairperson Nono Maloyi and his Deputy who is also the Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi on Sunday at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, in Rustenburg.
