The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has upheld its earlier decision to deny bail to North West businessman Brown Mogotsi, dismissing his second application despite claims of new evidence.
Mogotsi returned to court seeking bail on the basis of what his legal team described as new facts after his initial application was rejected on June 4. The first ruling cited concerns over residential addresses that could not be verified.
In handing down its latest decision, the court found no reason to depart from its original judgment, leaving Mogotsi in custody as the criminal case against him continues.
Mogotsi is charged with defeating the ends of justice, perjury and unlawful possession of a firearm. The charges arise from allegations that he orchestrated a staged assassination attempt in Vosloorus in November last year.
The matter is expected to proceed in court as prosecutors continue pursuing the case against the businessman.
