North-West businessman Suleiman Carrim will not appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday after being confined to bed following a heart attack.
The commission, which wrapped up the testimony of suspended Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief Umashi Dhlamini on Tuesday, has confirmed there will be no witness on Wednesday. Hearings will instead resume on Thursday with a new witness.
Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson told the commission that Carrim, who had been scheduled to testify this month, submitted a medical certificate confirming he is medically unfit to attend.
“Mr. Carrim was due to appear tomorrow. We have received a medical certificate indicating that he’s confined to bed,” Chaskalson said.
“We were then hoping to proceed with Mr. Mukhotse tomorrow, but he’s de facto secured a postponement by applying for my recusal. So, we no longer have a witness for tomorrow. So, we will have to resume on Thursday.”
The development marks the latest delay in Carrim’s appearance. The businessman had previously been hospitalised earlier in April after suffering a suspected heart attack while at a gym in Sandton, forcing an earlier postponement of his testimony.
The Madlanga Commission is probing alleged criminality, political interference and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system.
