Residents of the Elshadai Voting District in Ward 11, Marikana, in Ikageng, outside Potchefstroom, have expressed hope for change as they cast their ballots in the local government elections.
Voters turned out at the polling station, hoping to elect municipal representatives who will address their concerns and improve living conditions in the community.
Speaking to Newsnote, one voter expressed satisfaction with the electoral process and encouraged others to participate.
“We need a lot of things. So that inspired me to vote. I believe the process was free and fair, and I hope others will come and vote,” the voter said.
Another voter expressed optimism that service delivery would improve following the elections.
“We need roads, a stable water and electricity supply. I am proud that I was able to vote today,” she said.
Community leader Thembisile Tekani highlighted what he described as growing confidence in civic organisations among residents, amid dissatisfaction with political parties.
“Due to failures by political parties, residents seem to be hopeful in civic movements. This signifies a cry for help and hope for change,” Tekani said.
The community continues to face several socio-economic challenges, including unemployment, poverty, a shortage of formal housing and concerns about inadequate support for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) serving people with disabilities.
As residents await the election results, their concerns underscore the need for improved service delivery, better infrastructure and greater support for vulnerable members of the community.
