The South African National Defence Force, SANDF, has confirmed the deaths of two of its members at the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC.
“The attack on 25 June 2025 resulted in two fatalities and twenty injured. Four members who were critically injured have been hospitalised, whilst the rest who suffered minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon,” said SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini.
At least 2 900 SANDF soldiers have been deployed to the conflict hit Eastern region of the DRC, as part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) peace mission efforts.
According to reports, the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC), which includes South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania soldiers, has recorded a total number of 12 deaths, with SA being the hardest hit.
Despite calls from political parties and civil groups to have SANDF soldiers withdrawn from the peace mission, the Presidency has maintained its stance to fulfil the country’s obligation towards SADC. SANDF said the repatriation process is underway.
“The families of the two members who lost their lives have been informed, and all procedures to bring their mortal remains are in process. The names of the deceased will be communicated in due course,’’ explained Dlamini.
