The North West province is ready to host the 2023 Netball World Cup trophy tour which starts when the trophy arrives in South Africa in early June and handed over to the province on June 14.
The World Cup will take place in Cape Town from July 28 to August 6 and is expected to draw crowds and tourists from all over the world.
North West Netball president Helene Botha who was speaking during a meeting with the North West Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Kenetswe Mosenogi said the province was prepared for the tour.
“We have that privilege that we are receiving it [trophy] from Limpopo, the biggest thing is the fan park, there are eight big screens, in all the service points where this trophy will start, there are games that will be played and then we will take it to shopping centers,” she said.
Mosenogi said the province launched Netball Friday last year to encourage and mobilise the community and make sure that they are aware that the netball world cup is taking place in South Africa.
She said among other things, in terms of the presentation of the fan parks that municipalities will be organising, the province will be receiving the trophy as part of the mobilisation effort to create that hype that the world cup is taking place in South Africa.
“There are legacy projects that are also outlined in which we can play a role in it in terms of development of netball in the country and make sure that each and every corner netball is played by South Africans,” she said.
The trophy will start in Bojanala, then travel to Ngaka Modiri Molema then move to Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati and then to Dr Kenneth Kaunda in Potchefstroom where it will be handed over to the Free State Government.
