The National Prosecuting Authority is working to formally withdraw fraud and corruption charges against Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo and six co-accused this week.
The charges stem from allegations surrounding the irregular appointment of Brigadier Dineo Mokwele as head of Crime Intelligence’s technical services.
NPA head Andy Mothibi previously announced that the prosecution would abandon the case after evidence at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry indicated that the underlying investigation had not been completed.
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) is negotiating with the accused’s lawyers to bring the matter before court earlier than the scheduled date.
If an earlier date cannot be agreed on and enough of the accused cannot attend court, the NPA will proceed with the existing 3 September court date to formally withdraw the charges.
The development means the prosecution is seeking to bring the case against Khumalo and his co-accused to an end after concerns emerged over the investigation that led to their prosecution.
