Police in the North West have deployed additional resources to investigate a cash-in-transit robbery that occurred on Friday morning at the Olympia Park traffic circle near Rustenburg Mall.
They have also appealed to community members who may have information to contact their nearest police station to help bring those responsible to justice.
According to the provincial SAPS preliminary report, unknown suspects rammed a cash-in-transit vehicle at the traffic circle.
“Armed suspects, estimated to be approximately ten unidentified males, then opened fire on the cash-in-transit vehicle before using explosives to gain access to the cash compartment. The three security officers on board sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. They were disarmed of their service firearms and escorted away from the vehicle. At the same time, the suspects removed an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in multiple vehicles,” said police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh.
There were no fatalities as a result of the incident. However, a truck driver travelling near the scene was reportedly struck by a bullet.
He managed to drive himself to a nearby medical facility, where he received treatment.
The police reiterated the importance of collaboration with residents in their crime-fighting efforts, noting that such cooperation is essential to improving public safety and achieving other critical policing objectives.
