Political Parties are waiting in bated breath to see the steps President Cyril Ramaphosa will take, following damning allegations of corruption and political interference against the police top brass, made by KwaZulu-Natal Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Among others, Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of colluding with notorious businessmen, Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala and Oupa ‘Brown’ Mogotsi.
The explosive media briefing by Mkhwanazi was met with enormous public outcry and left ordinary citizens with more questions than answers.
Ahead of Ramaphosa’s official briefing to the nation on national security matters on Sunday, political parties are demanding swift action.
Speaking on the sidelines of the state funeral of the late former Deputy President David Mabuza in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, EFF Leader Julius Malema did not mince his words and called on Ramaphosa to fire Mchunu and those involved in the allegations with immediate effect.
“He’s not old in the job, he is very new in but already tainted.
He went into that institution to do bad things.
If we want to restore the confidence of the people in the police, you must fire the executive authority and we start dealing with crime,” Malema said.
Meanwhile, Rise Mzansi believes the President was afforded adequate time to consult on the matter and suggested he institute formal investigations.
“The President on Sunday need to at the very least announce the establishment of an open Commission of Inquiry chaired by a retired Judge.
The inquiry must have a set timeline of not more than 8 weeks and terms of reference.
He must also provide the details of his various consultations as per the Presidency statement on Thursday 10 July,” explained the party’s Parliamentary Chief Whip, Makashule Gana.
The revelations made by Mkhwanazi have been the point of discussion among many South Africans since the beginning of the week.
