Marcus Rashford delivered a stunning free-kick as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 2-0 at Spotify Camp Nou to secure the 2025/26 LaLiga title in front of their fiercest rivals.
In a historic night, LaLiga was decided by an El Clasico for the first time in nearly a century, with Barcelona claiming their 29th league crown in emphatic fashion.
The Catalan giants capitalised on a chaotic week for Real Madrid, who arrived in Barcelona surrounded by reports of dressing-room tensions and uncertainty over the club’s future direction. With Kylian Mbappe absent and speculation continuing around interim boss Alvaro Arbeloa, Madrid struggled to cope with Barcelona’s intensity from the opening whistle.
Barcelona also had an emotional motivation after announcing earlier in the day that head coach Hansi Flick had lost his father. The players responded with a performance full of energy and determination.
Rashford set the tone early with a sensational long-range free-kick that flew beyond Thibaut Courtois and into the far corner. The Manchester United loanee celebrated passionately as Camp Nou erupted, putting Barcelona firmly in control.
The hosts quickly doubled their advantage through Ferran Torres after a slick attacking move involving Dani Olmo. Madrid’s defence looked unsettled throughout the first half as Barcelona repeatedly threatened to extend their lead.
Rashford nearly grabbed a second goal after racing clear of Fran Garcia, but the England international dragged his effort wide with only Courtois to beat.
Real Madrid improved after the break, with Jude Bellingham driving the visitors forward. The midfielder thought he had reduced the deficit after finishing from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s chipped pass, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Courtois produced several important saves, including a late stop to deny substitute Robert Lewandowski, but Madrid were unable to prevent Barcelona from sealing another league triumph.
The defeat caps a disappointing campaign for Real Madrid, who finish the season without a major trophy after exits from both the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
Following the match, Jose Mourinho dismissed rumours linking him with a return to Madrid.
“I’ve had no contact with Real Madrid, none at all,” Mourinho said. “All the stories that have been circulating are speculation.”
Rashford’s future also became a major talking point after the final whistle. The forward admitted he would like to remain in Spain beyond his loan spell from Manchester United.
“I don’t know, I’m not a magician,” Rashford said. “But if I was, I would stay at Barcelona.”
The 28-year-old has enjoyed an impressive campaign in Catalonia, contributing 28 goals in 47 appearances while helping Barcelona retain their LaLiga title. His match-winning display against Real Madrid is likely to intensify discussions over a permanent transfer in the summer.
