Real Madrid have officially confirmed the appointment of José Mourinho as the club’s new first-team head coach on a three-year contract running until 30 June 2029.
The decision was approved during a Board of Directors meeting held on Thursday, 11 June, under the leadership of club president Florentino Pérez.
Mourinho is set to begin his new role officially on 13 July, when Real Madrid commence preparations for the forthcoming season.
The Portuguese manager returns to the Santiago Bernabéu more than a decade after his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2013. During that period, Mourinho helped restore Real Madrid’s domestic dominance, guiding the club to the La Liga title in the 2011/12 season with a record-breaking 100 points. He also led Los Blancos to Copa del Rey success in 2011 and lifted the Supercopa de España in 2012.
Renowned for his tactical discipline and relentless winning mentality, Mourinho’s appointment underlines Real Madrid’s ambition to re-establish themselves at the summit of European football.
His return is expected to generate considerable excitement among supporters, many of whom fondly remember the fierce rivalry between Mourinho’s Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona during one of the most compelling periods in Spanish football history.
The club is expected to formally unveil Mourinho ahead of the start of pre-season training in Madrid next month.
