Residents of Zone one in Ga-Rankuwa want the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality to repair the reservoir’s structural damage because they fear its water may be contaminated.
A 66-year-old man from the area who did not want his name to be mentioned said he was worried.
“We are pleading for assistance before the collapse of the house and injure people. The structural defects in these houses are caused by the water leaking and spilling in the yards.
“The reservoir is damaged, and water is leaking. The municipality has committed to come and assess the damages, and we are waiting for feedback. We are worried that it poses a threat to the residents, especially if it bursts,” he said.
When Newsnote visited the area on Wednesday, damage could be seen on the reservoir and water coming out through cracks. At the same time, residents living near the reservoir in zone one confirmed that water was flowing in their yards, causing structural defects on the houses.
Water could be seen flowing on the streets and in some yards. There were at least three houses that were on the verge of collapse.
Another resident said there were concerns that water could be contaminated due to the infrastructural damage to the reservoir.
“Our challenge is that the water could be contaminated because the leaks. Their infrastructure is vandalized, and there is no security at the reservoir. We could get sick. Their water is exposed,” said another resident who also opted to speak on condition of anonymity due to fear of victimization.
The municipality is yet to respond to Newsnote inquiry.
