Residents in the City of Tshwane are begging for access to clean flowing water and the maintenance of neighborhood lighting.
The request came as several of the capital’s biggest reservoirs’ water levels continued to drop. After the recent heatwave and frequent power outages severely damaged its infrastructure, Rand Water limited delivery.
A rising number of places were left without water for more than four days in a row, including Mamelodi, Atteridgeville, Mooikloof, Centurion, and Mabopane.
Basic services are desperately needed by people, places of business, and institutions. Atteridgeville’s parched residents said that the longer their taps went dry, the more harm it did to their dignity, health, and way of life. The sun was blazing down on them.
“I battled when my child got diarrhoea. We’re basically on our own if it’s not water, then it’s power, one resident remarked.
The Kalafong Academic Hospital suffered the most from the simultaneous power and water outages.
Residents and business owners in Soshanguve claimed they were suffering the weight of a nation in turmoil with no relief in sight. Businesses are on the verge of failure as a result of the water crisis and electrical outages.
The water cuts make sanitation a worry, which means that a reputable company may turn into a health risk.
