The ANC has been endorsed by several prominent international Muslim bodies who have urged their members in South Africa to vote for the liberation movement in the May 29 National and Provincial Elections.
The ruling party’s officials including President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted delegates from entities such as International Union of Muslim Scholars, European Muslim Council, United States of Council of Muslim Organisations and host of local Muslim bodies.
The ANC officials briefed the media alongside their international guests at the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.
“I am very glad to tell you that the appreciation across the world because of the firm stand of the South African government, of the ruling party in this pivotal moment for the people of Gaza, for the people of Palestine has been highly appreciated.
“At the very same time our visit is also including the good advise to the Muslim community of South Africa because due to the changes that are happening in the world we see that this year will be the year where 64 relevant elections will take place and many of them will have a direct impact on the fate of the Palestinian people and the situation in Gaza.
“We call on the Muslim population, Muslim community of South Africa as well as everybody who puts justice and peace at the forefront of his priorities to make sure that the existing party which has led this very laudable way to bring Israel to the International Court of Justice, to make it maintain and to ensure that all the gains that have been made are not lost so therefore we are encouraging everybody that we make sure that the ruling party stays in power so that we can take the next steps to take Israel into its responsibilities,” said the President of International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr Ibrahim el Zayat.
The party said it was humbled by the endorsement and did not take it lightly.
“This endorsement is a reflection of our shared values and the ANC’s unwavering dedication to international justice and the rights of the Palestinian people. This call by Global Muslim leaders inspires the ANC to do even more, together, with all our people of all Faiths, Cultures, Colour and backgrounds,” said Secretary General Fikile Mbalula.
Meanwhile President Cyril Ramaphosa said there were talks in government about the need to take action against South Africans who have joined the Israeli Defence Force and are participating in the ongoing genocide in Gaza Strip.
International affairs was never a major issue during previous elections but with the 2024 instalment political parties find themselves having to take a stand on the ongoing conflict. The likes of DA, Action SA, Patriotic Alliance and ACDP have had difficulties justifying their support for Israel.
