SADC Mobilises Emergency Response to Support Flood-Ravaged Mozambique

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) is working tirelessly alongside its partners to provide critical assistance to Mozambicans devastated by severe flooding, following the deployment of a specialised emergency response team to the country.

The SADC emergency response team, comprising experts in safety, logistics, search and rescue, and other essential fields, has arrived in Mozambique to bolster relief efforts. This deployment is a key component of SADC’s regional disaster response mechanisms, activated in the wake of the Mozambican government’s declaration of a Red Alert and an urgent appeal for humanitarian aid.

The floods have wreaked havoc across several provinces, including Gaza, Sofala, and Maputo, where vast areas remain submerged and inaccessible. Extensive damage has been reported to roads, public facilities, and other critical infrastructure, severely hampering access to affected communities. Tragically, fatalities have also been recorded amid the ongoing crisis.

SADC officials emphasised their commitment to supporting Mozambique during this challenging time, highlighting the bloc’s coordinated approach to disaster management in the region. As rescue and recovery operations continue, international partners are expected to contribute further resources to aid in rebuilding and providing immediate relief to displaced residents.

Updates on the situation will be monitored as the emergency team assesses needs on the ground.
