October 26 marks ten years since the killing of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper and Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa.
He was gunned down on 26 October 2014, on Sunday, at the home of his then girlfriend and singer Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg.
His club, Orlando Pirates paid tribute to him by posting a compilation of videos of him on the pitch, on their official X page with the caption “Ten years on, gone but never forgotten.’’
Fans commented on the post sharing their memories of the football star, including heartbreak over his untimely death.
On the 10th anniversary of his death, Meyiwa received praise for his unique talent that qualified Bafana Bafana to AFCON and humbleness towards his supporters.
Meyiwa’s murder trial started in 2020 after five men linked to the crime were arrested.
Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Mapisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli, are currently standing trial for Meyiwa’s murder at the High Court in Pretoria.
Witnesses consisting of Kelly’s sister, Zandile and his close friends Tumelo Madlala and Mthokozise Twala who were present the night he was killed, claim he was gunned down by intruders.
Meyiwa’s trial has so far been led by two judges, retired Tshifiwa Maumela and currently presided over by Ratha Mokgoatlheng.
It has faced public criticism due to continuous delays.
Recently the trial had to be pushed back for over a week, as one of the legal counsels, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu fell ill.
When it resumes on 28 October 2024, lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda will continue with his testimony.
