Durban is preparing for a major economic boost as thousands of rugby supporters descend on the city for the highly anticipated Springboks versus Wales clash at Kings Park Rugby Stadium.
The Round 3 fixture of the inaugural Nations Championship is expected to attract a large crowd, creating increased demand for accommodation, restaurants, transport services and local businesses.
Beyond the action on the field, the international rugby fixture is set to provide a welcome boost for the city’s hospitality and tourism sectors, with fans travelling from across South Africa and abroad to experience the match.
Authorities have encouraged supporters attending the game to make use of park-and-ride facilities from The Pavilion and Gateway to reduce congestion around the stadium and improve the overall match-day experience.
Durban Metro Police spokesperson Boyzie Zungu confirmed that no road closures will be implemented around Kings Park, but officers will be deployed at key intersections to manage traffic flow.
“There will be no road closures; all intersections around the stadium will be manned by officers,” Zungu said.
He urged fans to use the arranged transport services, saying the park-and-ride system would help ease pressure on roads surrounding the venue.
The Springboks-Wales encounter highlights the role of major sporting events in driving economic activity, supporting local businesses and showcasing Durban as a destination for international sport.
