Some Soweto parents of Grade R and Grade 1 learners could not hide their joy as they escorted their children to school on the first day of the academic year. Smiles, excitement and even tears of happiness filled school gates as parents shared this important milestone with their little ones.
Newsnote spoke to parents in Orlando East, Soweto who described the day as emotional and memorable. Sinayonathi Mahlombe said she felt proud and hopeful as she took her bundle of joy to school for the very first time.
“The future of the child is important. That’s why it’s important to take them to school,” she said.
Zanela Busakwe also shared her happiness, saying the process went smoothly and the school environment was welcoming.
“I’m so happy. The system went well and the teachers treated us so well. I left my child in the classroom happy, and I am happy too,” she said.
Busakwe added that her child already has big dreams, saying he wants to become a pilot one day.
For Nelly Rikhotso, the warm reception from the school staff made the experience even more special.
“I got a warm welcome from the gate all the way to the staff room. It was the first time my child was coming to learn here, and it felt very special,” she said.
Rikhotso added that her child dreams of becoming a teacher, often taking on the role when playing with friends.
Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education says more than 1,000 Grade 1 learners in the province are still awaiting placement.
