The Gauteng provincial government says it will spare no effort in its drive to provide housing for millions who are currently living in informal settlements and backyards.

Human settlements MEC Tasneem Motara handed over 140 newly built RDP houses to beneficiaries in Tembisa that include families that all along had to share apartheid 4 roomed houses with other families leading to protracted 

Text: The apartheid government allocated a single 4 room house to two black families, an arrangement that created tensions among them.

The MEC says by allocating each family its own house the democratic government has restored their dignity.

The 140 units are part of a mega project that has so far delivered more 4000 houses.

“These are people from the informal settlements of Tempisa, residents who are in back rooms who registered between 96 and 99 in the main. Today we were able to resolve 24 out of the 48 what we what we refer to as two-in-ones. They are old stock from around the 1960s that were semi-detached, you had double  families allocated on a single stand.

It has been a long difficult journey to be able to resolve that  but fortunately together with the municipality being really fully supportive and also the families because it needed those families to be fully on board,” said Motara.

Motara said young people were also included in the allocation to mark youth month.

“As part of youth month we also showcased that we allocated 15  under 35 beneficiaries. Of course those are, they would have registered at different times (but they fully qualify but also is to demonstrate that we are integrating different demographics, different age groups into society, into communities,” said
