Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has agreed to become a State witness in a major corruption case involving a South African Police Service (SAPS) health services tender.

Matlala has pleaded guilty to fraud, corruption and money laundering charges linked to a multimillion-rand contract awarded to his company, Medicare24 Tshwane. The contract was intended to provide health and wellness services for police officers.

The agreement was confirmed at the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court after months of negotiations between the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the accused.

As part of the plea deal, Matlala will now cooperate fully with the State, provide evidence, and testify against other individuals implicated in the alleged corruption network.

Prosecutors say his cooperation is expected to strengthen the State’s case and help expose the full extent of corruption linked to public procurement within SAPS.

The agreement reportedly includes a proposed 15-year prison sentence, with prosecutors outlining the basis for the sentencing recommendation.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as efforts continue to dismantle alleged corruption networks linked to government contracts.
